Vancouver Island Boxing Hall of Fame: by Brian Zelley


In 2021 the first year for the Vancouver Island Boxing Hall of Fame was introduced. There were numerous potentials but in year one the top five were Donnie Orr, Brian Zelley, Jason Heit, Jeannine Garside and Billy Townsend.  Donnie Orr is a 2000 Canadian Olympic boxer and an Inductee of the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame and the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame.  Brian Zelley is a former boxing who is a 1964 Vancouver Island Champion, a 1971 co-founder  of the Nanaimo Boxing Club, a boxing coach with several clubs, a ring official, a former Boxing BC directo, and a member of the boxing committee for the 1994 Greater Victoria Commonwealth Games and in 1991 served as the boxing chairman.In 2010 was one of six founders of the BC Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame along with Ray Beaulieu, Scott Galloway, Steve Wood, Steven Kodiak and Dan McGarvie.                                                                                               Jason Heit is a former Canadian boxing champion and active in International tournaments and is currently an active boxing coach.                     Jeannine Garside is one of the former top BC and Camadian women boxers and Billy Townsend is a former professional boxer that fought many former world champions.                                                                                                                                                                                     In year 2, 2022  there is currently a list of 15 potentials including two Island Boxing clubs.  It is expected that at least ten new inductees will join the first five.
